Migrena jest powszechnym, pierwotnym bólem głowy powodującym niesprawność. Stanowi ogromny problem zarówno medyczny, jak i ekonomiczny. Leczenieiefarmakologiczne obejmujące m.in. modyfikację stylu życia i unikanie czynników wyzwalających napady oraz leczenie farmakologiczne u wielu pacjentów nie przynosi pożądanych efektów terapeutycznych. Jednym z patomechanizmów prowadzącym do wyzwolenia bólu migrenowego jest ucisk i podrażnienie nerwów zewnątrzczaszkowych przez otaczające struktury kostne, mięśniowe, powięziowe i naczyniowe w dobrze zdefiniowanych miejscach. Opisywane jako miejsca/punkty spustowe lub miejsca/punkty wyzwalające. Chirurgiczna dekompresja nerwów może okazać się skutecznym i długoterminowym leczeniem pacjentów. Leczenie chirurgiczne powinno być włączone do wielowarstwowego modelu opieki nad pacjentami cierpiącymi z powodu migreny.
